Devin Haney v Joseph Diaz Boxing Betting Tips & Predictions

Undefeated Devin Haney will look to continue his rise to greatness when he puts his WBC lightweight title on the line against Joseph ‘Jo Jo’ Diaz in Las Vegas on December 5 (UK time).

Haney became the youngest world champion in boxing back in October 2019 when he was promoted from WBC interim champion to World Champion after Vasiliy Lomachenko was elevated to ‘Franchise Champion.’

His first title defence as the real world champion was in November 2019 when he retired Zaur Abdullaev in the fourth round. He then defeated Yuriokis Gamboa on points in November 2020, before facing his toughest test.

His biggest challenge in the ring took place in Las Vegas when he took on the great Jorge Linares. Haney controlled the fight, not allowing Linares to get into a rhythm, but he was up against it in the latter rounds. He managed to survive those last two rounds and won on points.

Joseph Diaz is now the interim lightweight champion, and he will be looking to get his hands on the real thing this weekend.

Diaz was supposed to be fighting Ryan Garcia, but Garcia had to withdraw with a hand injury. This led to the fight with Haney being made. It’s a win-win for Diaz. Instead of putting his interim belt on the line, he has the chance of becoming the actual world champion.

The 29-year-old has a professional record of 34 fights, 32 wins, one defeat and one draw. His only defeat since turning professional in 2012 was against Gary Russell Jr when he failed to win the WBC featherweight title.

Since that defeat, he has won six and drawn one. He comes into this fight on the back of a unanimous points decision victory over Javier Fortuna which saw him claim the interim belt.

This is a massive step-up for Diaz. If he wants to be known as one of the best lightweight fighters, then he needs to put in a dominating performance against Haney.

Unfortunately for Diaz, I think Haney is a class above him. I expect Haney to win this on points as Diaz will refuse to quit. This fight will go the distance with Haney keeping hold of his title.

Devin Haney v Joseph Diaz Boxing Betting Tips & Predictions: Fighter’s Predictions

Devin Haney: “What I want to do in this fight is beat JoJo Diaz worse than he’s ever been beaten. He’s been beaten once by Gary Russell, and I want to beat him more cleaner and better than anybody has. I wanted to get the stoppage with Linares, and I knew he’d been stopped in all his previous losses. I came to my senses, and I’m going to go in there and do what I do. If they say something, they do. If they don’t, they don’t. A fighter like Jojo Diaz went to the Olympics, and he’s been at the top and been in big fights. I was winning the rounds so easily (against Linares), and it was much easier than I thought it was going to be. So, I kind of fell asleep in there, got a little lax, and that’s what happens when you get lax in the fight game. Linares hit me with a good shot, woke me up, and now I’ve learned that winning rounds easy, but it’s still a fight. You got to fight from round one to round 12. It definitely showed that I can take a punch. They say nowadays that I got a ‘Glass jaw’ or something like that, but he hit me right on the chin. I might have been hurt, but he didn’t put me down, and he didn’t come back and knock me out in the next round. It shows how good my chin actually is. I came out in the next round, and he hit me even more, and it didn’t do anything. It just showed that I can take a shot. They can say what they want to say. Whether they say I was wrong for tying up, I finished the fight, got the job done, and I go on to the next.”

Joseph Diaz: “I’m making sure that I’m covering all the bases — not just physically training every day, busting my ass every single day physically — but mentally as well, just making sure that I’m prepared for this moment, making sure that I’m praying and continuing to keep on that right path. I just feel like this is an opportunity of a lifetime and I’m not taking it lightly at all. I’m taking full responsibility for it. I just don’t feel like he has that dog in him and I’m going to showcase to everybody what I’m talking about come fight night. He hasn’t been in deep waters like I have inside the pro ring. And I just feel like once I take him there it’s going to be hard for him to adapt because he’s never been there before, and I’ve been there multiple times where I’m going to be able to have that experience, have that knowledge to overcome whatever obstacle that is put in front of me that night. We’re both tough fighters and we’re both experienced fighters but I feel like this fight right here is going to take the winner’s career to the next pedestal and I’m willing to do whatever it takes to come out victorious that night, and I just can’t wait until December 4th.”
