The first incarnation of the XFL may have been nothing short of a disaster, but it did have its moments and with the league returning in 2020 we have been taking a look back at the five best finishes during the doomed 2001 campaign.
There were some one-sided blow-outs and plenty of bad football played over the course of the 2001 season, but amongst that were a few classics including a sensational double overtime game between the Los Angeles Xtreme and Chicago Enforcers that forced the delay of the world renowned Saturday Night Live television show in the United States.
Of course, with this being the XFL even an entertaining game like this could not completely avoid farce – as we learned on ESPN’s 30 For 30 documentary, ‘This Was The XFL’, somebody forgot to put fuel in a generator and that meant the game went off air while it was still in progress. I would not have wanted to be that person when Vince McMahon found them!
The Xtreme and Enforcers tried to make up for that blunder by producing an epic that needed two overtime periods to determine a winner, and that was not the first time that the Chicago franchise found themselves going right down to the wire.
