Although tennis featured in the original Olympic games it was dropped in 1924 due to a dispute between organising bodies and not re-introduced in an official capacity until 1988. USA and Great Britain lead the way in the tennis medals table, although all 15 of Team GB’s golds, and 39 of their 40 medals came between 1896 and 1924.

At the London 2012 games tennis players will compete for medals in four different disciplines; men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles.

Andy Murray carries Team GB’s hopes as he looks to go one better than his second-place finish at Wimbledon earlier this summer. The Scot is drawn in the same half of the draw as Novak Djokovic after Spain’s Rafael Nadal withdrew due to injury, and could face Roger Federer in the final at the All England club for the second time this year.
