Swimming is one of the original Olympic sports with athletes entering the pool to race for medals ever since the games began. There are a total of 32 different events contested in the 50metre pool (16 male, 16 female), with an additional two (1 male, 1 female) races in the form of 10km open-water swims.

In 2008 Team GB’s swimmers collected a total of six medals including two golds that were won by Rebecca Adlington. Adlington, who would later go on to be awarded an OBE, broke a 19 year-old record in the 800metre final to take the gold on her way to becoming the most successful Olympic swimmer in British history. At London 2012 she will again compete in the 800metre and 400metre freestyle.
