Olympics football is the original international football tournament. It was the Olympics tournament that, when the lines between amateur and professionalism became increasingly blurred, inspired the formation of the FIFA World Cup. Although the tournament has lost much of its prestige since its early days, it still serves a purpose within the world game.

Many nations, South Americans in particular, use the Olympic games to blood young talent. While at London 2012 Brazil are using the tournament as a preparation stepping-stone towards the World Cup on their home soil in 2014. Without the need to qualify for 2014 Brazil are grateful for a rare opportunity to play competitive football.

Ahead of the games there was much controversy and debate regarding Team GB’s inclusion. Although Britain have not entered a team to compete in the Olympics since 1972, when they did not qualify, there was great desire to have the nation’s number one sport represented at London 2012 and so, after much legal wrangling, Team GB were entered in both the men’s and women’s tournaments.
