Juan Martin Del Potro has announced that he'll be unable to compete in this year's Madrid Masters. Having also missed out on an appearance at the Portugal Open this week, the big Argentine has been unable to recover in time for the Masters 1000 series event at the Magic Box.
Delpo will most likely be very disappointed that he can't compete. He reached the semi-finals last season, where two lost tie-breakers saw him fall to eventual runner-up Tomas Berdych on the blue clay. This means Del Potro will be losing 360 ranking points, which is more than you'd receive for winning many ATP events.
Although Del Potro isn't necessarily a natural dirtballer, there's every reason to believe that he could have done well in Madrid this week. He reached the semi-finals back in 2009 too, when the tournament was played on the more familiar red clay, and made a bright start in 2010 before having to retire ahead of a third round meeting with Rafael Nadal.
With Del Potro out of the draw, Belgium's David Goffin will step in. The 22-year-old has never competed in the Madrid main draw, though he reached round four at the French Open as a qualifier, taking a set from Roger Federer before bowing out in a four-setter.
