Rangers looking for their first Champions League win on Tuesday against Unirea Urziceni
Rangers have had mixed fortunes so far in the Champions League this season. The Scottish champions earned an impressive point in Germany, against Stuttgart, but then followed it up with a disappointing four-nil home defeat to Sevilla. They will be keen to get the first win of the campaign on Tuesday at Ibrox against Romanians Unirea Urziceni, and should be capable of doing so, and landing generous odds of 5/6 (Totesport).
Unirea won their first ever Champions League point when they drew at home to Stuttgart in the last round of matches, and will be hoping they can either repeat the feat at Ibrox (13/5, Bet365) or even sneak a win (4/1, SkyBet), which would surely end Rangers’ hopes of qualification for the knock-out stages.
Tuesday represents the first time this season that Rangers have faced European opposition as favourites, and the onus will be on Walter Smith to go with an attacking line-up, and take the game to Unirea. In their previous two matches Rangers have gone with a single striker and a packed midfield, but on Tuesday Smith may opt to play both Kenny Miller (11/2, Totesport) and Steven Naismith (8/1, Bet365) in attack, although once again top-scorer Kris Boyd (5/1, Totesport) will probably miss out, due to a perceived lack of industry.
In their last home game, against Celtic, Rangers were two-nil up after just fifteen minutes. The Ibrox crowd will hoping for a similar good start, and Bluesq offer 2/1 that Rangers lead at half-time, and then go on to beat Unirea, and considering that the Romanians have been behind at half-time in both of their Champions League matches, that price may represent good value.
Rangers welcome back Algerian centre back Madjid Bougherra for Tuesday’s game, and that should ensure that they are much tighter at the back than they have been in recent weeks. Walter Smith likes to keep things tight in Europe, and will be hoping that his side can keep a clean sheet (5/4,SkyBet) and win to nil (2/1, SkyBet), with both one-nil (11/2, SkyBet) and two-nil (15/2, SkyBet) score-lines strong possibilities.
