Liverpool FC planning to appeal Joe Cole’s red card

Reds midfielder devastated to be dismissed against Gunners as the teams draw 1-1

Betclic are offering all Bettingpro readers a no-lose bet on the Manchester United v Newcastle United match. Deposit twenty pounds and if you lose they will give you your stake back.

It was a challenge that seems to be splitting opinions, with Liverpool fans arguing it was probably a yellow card and Arsenal fans insisting that Joe Cole deserved to see red.

Martin Atkinson probably got it right as the former Chelsea midfielder had both feet off the ground when challenging Laurent Koscielny, although Roy Hodgson has confirmed that the club might appeal against the decision – especially as Joe Cole now faces a three-match ban.

Hodgson said: "We are pleased to see it wasn't a serious injury because he [Koscielny] was able to come out and play in the second half. Joe will be a big loss if he is suspended and maybe we will try and see if there is some way for the referee to have a look at it again.

"I don't want to make a frivolous appeal, that's for sure. Joe Cole has a great disciplinary record. He has never been sent off before and had only a few yellow cards. Anyone who watches Joe play knows he is not the sort of guy who goes in for blood-curdling tackles."

Even so, the referee has to judge each challenge on merit, irrespective of who the player is. If an appeal is lodged and Liverpool are found to be frivolous, the ban could be extended to four games.

Joe Cole is 6/1 (Paddy Power) to score against Trabzonspor on Thursday night.
