Marseille are desperate to issue a title-winning response to a woeful 2011/12 season that saw them finish down in 10th place, and so far they have done just that by taking 19 points from a possible 24 to open up a three-point lead at the top. They reeled off six straight victories to surge to the summit, but that excellent run of form was brought to an end by a shock 4-1 hammering at the hands of Valenciennes. Marseille bounced back with a draw against big-spending Paris St Germain prior to the international break, and they will now look to return to winning ways when they visit rock-bottom Troyes on Sunday.

Paris St Germain remain three points behind Marseille following that recent draw. They made a slow start to the season as Zlatan Ibrahimovic failed to find his scoring touch, but the Swede has been in top form recently with seven goals in their last five games, and he has helped fire them to second in the standings with an unbeaten record of four wins and four draws. Next up for Ibrahimovic and Co is a home game against fifth-place Reims on Saturday afternoon.

While Marseille and PSG are flying high in the Ligue 1 standings, reigning champions Montpellier are desperately trying to get their title defence on track – without success. The Stade de la Mosson outfit stunned French football by clinching a maiden title last season, but a successful defence of their crown is looking unlikely. They have taken just eight points from their opening eight games and already find themselves 11 points behind leaders Marseille. Montpellier will look to bounce back from the loss to Evian TG when they head to Rennes on Saturday.

Lyon are once again expected to be title contenders and they have taken 15 points from a possible 24 so far. They bounced back from a recent defeat to Bordeaux by earning a point at Lorient, and they will want to return to winning ways this weekend when they play host to Brest on Sunday.

The remaining fixtures for this weekend are as follows:

Sunday, October 21

13:00 Ajaccio v Bastia
16:00 Lyon v Brest
