Speaking to the media on the eve of the first Ashes Test match, Cook said the series were career-defining for many an Australian and English cricketers. He added, "It's not the be all and end all, but I've had some very fond memories in Ashes series of winning it and hope to add a few more over my career."

Cook also said there was much more hype around the Ashes as compared to the other series and the difficult art was to keep the game same as always. The captain said, "It's the same 22 yards, the same red ball, but it does heighten. That's where you want to test yourself, in increased pressure situations."

This will be Cook's first full series as the captain of the English side in an Ashes series. England won the Ashes in 2005 before Australia wrested it back in 2006-07. Since then, England have won both the ensuing Ashes series - in England and in Australia - to retain the urn.

England are 10/11 (SkyBet) to win the first Ashes 2013 Test match.
