The festive period is traditionally one that football punters enjoy as there are games taking every day and so plenty of betting opportunities. One punter will certainly remember Christmas 2016 after a long shot double on two matches secured him a win of £20,280 from a £30 stake.

The Celtic fan placed a First Goalscorer bet on Erik Sviatchnko scoring for the Hoops against Ross County and former Bhoy Virgil Van Dijk opening the scoring for Southampton against Tottenham Hotspur. Van Dijk obliged after just 2 minutes at odds of 25/1 and Sviatchenko netted later in the first half at odds of 25/1 to give the punter a massive payout of £20,280.

The bet, which was placed in Bonnybridge in Scotland in a William Hill shop has to rank as one of the best, and most unlikely of 2016. It will ensure, however, that the lucky punter has a New Year that he will never forget.
