Mahram and Smart Gilas seek final berth in FIBA-Asia Champions Cup
The 2011 FIBA-Asia Champions Cup enters its semifinal stage today with Mahram Tehran battling Smart Gilas Pilipinas at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Mahram reached the last four by demolishing Saudi Arabian club Al Ittihad 102-65 in the quarterfinals. The two-time defending champions outscored their opponents 32-15 in the first quarter and coasted the rest of the way.
Former NBA player Chiekh Samb powered his way to 18 points to lead the Iranian powerhouse to an easy win. The Senegalese big man also had five rebounds and three blocked shots. Backing him up were fellow import Chris Williams and Javad Davari, who chipped in 14 points each. Oshin Sahakian also played well for the winning side, posting a double-double 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Smart Gilas, meanwhile, rallied past Syrian champions Al Jalaa 85-80. The Filipinos trailed by as many as 15 points in the second period but outscored their opponents 27-16 in the third to complete their comeback.
Marcus Douthit and JV Casio delivered the crucial baskets to lead the nationals to its fifth-straight win in the tournament. Naturalized center Douthit finished with 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while speedy guard Casio tallied 22 points, including four treys.
