They might have slotted four goals past England and Argentina, although Spain were an entirely different proposition for Germany, with Die Mannschaft coming off second best in Wednesday’s semi-final.

It means that, as per four years ago, Joachim Low’s team will compete in the 3rd / 4th place play-off and the bookies make them strong favourites to once again be successful. Coral offer 8/11 that the Germans are too strong for Uruguay, as they proved against Portugal in Stuttgart during the 2006 World Cup.

These matches are always slightly unpredictable, in the sense that both teams will be nursing disappointment from coming so close to reaching the final and that respective managers might look to give squad players the chance to feature in a World Cup. However, we should see a strong German line-up who want to show that they were among the best three teams in the competition.

Thomas Muller will be back from suspension and can be backed at 8/1 (bet365) to score the opening goal of the game, while Miroslav Klose will almost certainly get the chance to try and equal Ronaldo’s World Cup scoring record. The Bayern Munich forward is the 9/2 favourite (bet365) to break the deadlock against a Uruguay team that conceded three goals on Tuesday night.

Oscar Tabarez’s team did well to reach the semi-finals, although they will not be remembered as anything but a hard-working spirited team who controversially knocked Ghana out of the 2010 World Cup on penalties in the quarter final. Sporting Bet offer 9/2 that La Celeste win this match, although their defence did look shaky in Cape Town.

At least Luis Suarez (9/1 Victor Chandler) will get the chance to add to his tally of three goals scored in South Africa, with the striker returning to the fray after that controversial handball on the line against Ghana. There is likely to be a bidding war for the Ajax front man after the finals, although strike partner Diego Forlan (15/2 Victor Chandler) has outshone him, despite claims that he hasn’t been 100% fit.

Could Germany score four goals for the fourth time in this tournament? It’s eminently possible and we like the look of either a 4-0 (40/1 Stan James) or 4-1 (33/1 Coral) victory in favour of Low’s team. This is a side that are likely to make waves over the next few years and they will want to lay down a marker in Port Elizabeth.
