Wesley Sneijder and David Villa head the World Cup player of the tournament betting after 10 players were short-listed by FIFA for the South Africa 2010 Golden Ball award.

Dutch midfielder Sneijder is 8/5 favourite with Blue Square ahead of Spain striker Villa, who is a 7/4 chance after both topped the scoring charts with five going into the closing weekend.

The winner will be announced after Sunday’s final based on votes from journalists accredited for the World Cup.

There is not one goalkeeper nominated this year, while finalists make up half the list, with Xavi 11/2 to prevail, Andres Iniesta 7/1 and Arjen Robben 11/1.

Three others will take part in the third-place play-off, with Germany pair Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mesut Ozil both 25/1 to get the nod and Uruguay’s Diego Forlan 33/1.
Lionel Messi gets a mention despite Argentina’s quarter-final exit but is 50/1 to oblige and Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan can be backed at 66/1.

The Golden Ball award winner in 2006 caused some embarrassment to the organisers; Zinedine Zidane was announced shortly after being sent off for head-butting Marco Materazzi.
Germany midfielder Thomas Muller, Mexico forward Giovani dos Santos and Ghana midfielder Andre Ayew have made the three-man shortlist for the young player of the World Cup.
