The pair, who won the Sanya Open in 2010, come into this one on the back of their success in the season opening Brasilia Open last week and will be eager for more success on home sand.

They'll be joined by sixty four other teams from 27 countries for the first women’s single gender event of the season, all competing for their share of $190,000 in prize money.

The country-quota competitions got underway today, to be followed by the qualification rounds on Wednesday and the main round draw on Thursday.

First held in 2008, the Sanya Open has seen success for four different women’s pairs in the last four years with April Ross/Jennifer Boss from the US, Simone Kuhn and Nadine Zumkehr from Switzerland and Juliana Felisberta Silva/Larissa Franca of Brazil all celebrating title victories - as well as the aforementioned Chinese duo.

The Olympic Bay Sanya Open is the first of three consecutive 2012 FIVB Beach Volleyball SWATCH World Tour events to be hosted in China, with tournaments in Beijing and Shanghai still to come.

This year’s Sanya Open is also included as a part of the Beach Volleyball Qualification Tournament for the 2012 London Olympic Games, so there's extra incentive to reach Sunday's final.
