USA did all the right things offensively and defensively by beating Japan in straight sets (25-22, 25-17, 25-23) in the opening match of the final round of the 2011 World Grand Prix at the Macau East Asian Games Dome on Wednesday.

USA unwrapped an excellent coverage of the net limiting Japan on their attack attempts at the net in the first set. The Americans likewise displayed tight floor defense that allowed hitters Jordan Larson and Destinee Hooker to attack the weak Japanese side.

Japan had moments of struggle on the strong attacks of the American players and could not set-up their offense properly but later on found their rhythm through creative plays made by setter Yoshie Takeshita confusing the American defense. The
Americans regained momentum and took the first and second set easily.

The Japanese held their ground for them to have a close margin against the USA in the third set. Last minute defensive stops were made by Japan and some service mishaps on the American side gave Japan a window to close in on the Americans. Team USA immediately escaped this Japanese upsurge on a Larson attack hit from the left side.

“I like the way USA team played today, I thought we came out and played with good energy. In terms of the service line, we were strong so that was good. Japan is always a challenging opponent because of the speed in which they play and the way they battle which is the case today so they are a good team and we are very happy to win over such a very strong opponent,” USA coach Hugh McCutcheon said at the post-match press conference.

USA will next take on Italy in Pool B while Japan will battle Brazil.
