UFC 139 odds – Shogun can ruin return of Dan Henderson

Dan Henderson returns to the Ultimate Fighting Championship this weekend to take on former light-heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 139.

Early in his fighting career Henderson won a close split decision over Murilo Rua in the Pride Fighting Championships. Ten years later “Shogun” will look to avenge his brother’s loss when he takes on “Hendo” at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.

These two fighters are long overdue to step into the Octagon against each other, but it’s Henderson that has the most to gain from a win this Saturday night.

Since Rua has already been soundly beaten by current champ Jon Jones, a shot at the title would not be in the pipeline regardless of the outcome against Henderson. But if Henderson beats Rua he would be in the mix for a shot at Jones for the UFC Light Heavyweight strap.

Pinnacle Sports currently have Henderson handicapped as a 2.17 underdog to beat Rua. Despite Henderson’s big right hand he will surely be at a disadvantage if he decides to stand and strike with Rua, but the wrestling and ground game edge has to go to Henderson.

Rua is currently listed as a 1.78 favourite. That line has steadily grown over the last few weeks as more MMA bettors are opting for action on Rua.

The former UFC Light Heavyweight champion should be able to dominate Henderson as long as he can defend the takedown and keep the fight in the middle of the Octagon.

The UFC 139 undercard features a lineup of interesting fights that includes contender matchups in the welterweight and bantamweight divisions.

In the co-main event former world champion Urijah Faber will be back in action against former WEC Bantamweight champion Brian Bowles. Pinnacle Sports has Faber handicapped as a 1.45 favourite while the underdog Bowles will pay 2.97 for the upset. There may be some value on Bowles in this one as Faber is clearly past his prime but his big name is still getting a lot of respect in betting circles.

In a Welterweight contender matchup, Rick Story v Martin Kampmann looks like the “fight of the night” candidate. Story has looked impressive of late and gets the nod as the 1.72 favourite while Kampmann has dropped three of his last five fights and will pay 2.26 if he can find a way to slow down the “Horror” Story.

MMA bettors at Pinnacle Sports can also get action on the Cung Le-Wanderlei Silva fight. Due to a string of six losses in his last eight fights, Silva has been handicapped as the 2.17 underdog. Lee will be making his UFC debut and is expected to knock out Silva at some point. Current lines have Lee as the 1.78 favourite.
