Georges St-Pierre is deservedly the odds-on favourite to successfully retain his UFC welterweight championship at UFC 111 this weekend.
GSP, boasting a 19-2 record and undefeated in his last six fights, is a best price 2/11 (
Boylesports) to move to 20-2 when he steps into the Octagon Saturday night to take on Britain's Dan Hardy.
Hardy (24-7) is well aware of the task that is ahead of him, as reflected in the betting with Coral offering a standout 11/2 on the Nottingham-based fighter recording a shock win.
The 27-year-old's plan his simple: hit GSP as hard as he can.
"He can jump higher than me. He can lift trucks. It makes no difference to me," Hardy said ahead of this weekend's clash. "When I connect on his chin, he can lift all he wants, he’s still going down."
Tough words from the Brit, who is fully aware of where GSP has the upper hand. The Canadian, who has world class Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, has a superior takedown game to Hardy and also has brutal ground and pound.
Last time out, GSP recorded a unanimous decision win over Thiago Alves at UFC 100 last July. It was a convincing win against an opponent who many thought could take his welterweight crown.
But if Alves and his standup game can't see off GSP, what chance to Hardy have?
"I think the problem is Alves was so afraid of being taken down that he didn’t show his best stuff standing," Hardy said of that fight.
"With me, I know that I’m going to be taken down at some point. And I’m not afraid of being on my back.
"I have a lot of guys in England working on my takedown defence. I have a guy in Los Angeles who was a Division I wrestler, a guy on the British Olympic team. It’s not because
I’m fighting Georges, but it’s an area of my game I want to work on."
Paddy Power offer 11/4 on GSP v Hardy winning Fight of the Night which is of interest.
The fight is odds-on to be over inside five rounds, with bwin 3/11 the best price available at time of writing.
Paddy Power go 5/2 on the bout going to the judges.
