Both Djokovic and Federer delighted their fans with straight sets quarter-finals victories. Federer had much to prove after a series of disappointing displays but he took to the court with a spring in his step and demolished Mikhail Youzhny in barely 90 minutes.

It means Federer is into his 32nd major semi-final (surpassing Jimmy Connors' mark of 31), the first time he's reached this stage at Wimbledon since he won the title in 2009. He's never played Djokovic on grass before and it will be a new fascinating episode in their ongoing rivalry. In recent years, Federer has done best against Djokovic when they've played indoors and he'll feel that a faster, lower bouncing surface will aid his chances.

“It is interesting that this is our first grass court match," Federer told the press. "I'm looking forward to it. It's been a good tournament so far for me. I'm happy [that] I'm feeling good again. It gives me confidence going into a big match against Novak."

"This is a good tournament for me as I’ve got further than I have the last couple of years. My back was fine and is holding up, and it feels great being back in the semis. Usually once I get there I’m playing some of my best tennis. Of course playing Novak won’t make that easy and a big performance will be needed. He has improved his consistency so much. He’s a very complete player right now. But my back is fine and holding up. I’m not tired or injured. I’m fresh and ready to go, whereas at Roland Garros I struggled all the way through."
