The Swiss maestro was in fine form as he secured a 6-1 6-3 6-2 victory over Fognini in just 74 minutes, booking his place in round three at SW19.

“I am pleased with how I performed and particularly with my concentration levels. You need to focus to the last point,” Federer told the BBC after his win.

Federer is bidding to equal Pete Sampras' record of seven titles at SW19, and if he does manage to take the top prize he will reclaim the world number one spot as he attempts to better the American legend's record of 286 cumulative weeks as the top ranked player.

The 30-year-old feels he is in good form and is delighted by his performances to date at Wimbledon.

He added: “I think I played a great first round (against Spain’s Albert Ramos) and great second round and I am very pleased with how I am playing overall.

“The seeds might be coming my way now which will probably be more difficult but we will see how it goes. I have a day to prepare and hopefully I will play well on Friday.”

Federer, who can be backed at 4/1 to secure the title, will face either American Michael Russell or France's Julien Benneteau in his next match on Friday.

British hopeful Andy Murray is priced at 10/1 to secure the Wimbledon title and the Scot appears to be free of the back injury that troubled him at the French Open after his outstanding straight sets victory over Nikolay Davydenko in his first round tie.
