The final of the 2012 US Open is now just hours away and it looks like we’ve got a thrilling match ahead of us. Tournament favourite Serena Williams has progressed as expected, though the manner in which she’s steamrollered her opponents is still breathtaking. Azarenka, meanwhile, has been through a very tough draw, overcoming some of the best players in the draw to earn her place in the final.
The Belarusian prevailed on Friday with a nail-biting 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 success against French Open champion Maria Sharapova. “I felt like towards the end of the first I was kind of getting a little bit better,” said Azarenka. “Trying to find the momentum and getting more and more comfortable in the match.”
“So even though I lost the first set I felt like it was close. I had a few opportunities; I missed them. But once it finished, I kind of thought that I had to turn it around and start from zero like it's a new match.”
Williams joined Azarenka in the final when she thrashed Sara Errani 6-1, 6-2. The Italian simply couldn’t find a way into the match, despite trying a few different strategies. Serena hasn’t even come close to losing a set all week, and just like last year, she’ll be expected to win the final. Having finished as the runner-up last season she’ll be eager to make amends.
Azarenka has struggled against Serena in the past and has never beaten her. “I have to, you know, try to return well, definitely,” said the top seed in anticipation of her next challenge. “And serve. Because, well, with Serena it's not really the long rallies. It's all about who grabs the first opportunity, who is more brave to step it up right from the beginning.”
