Her meeting with Petra Martic lasted for just 51 minutes, with Stosur clinching an assured 6-1, 6-1 success.
“To be honest, I don't know if there is necessarily more pressure to go out and have to defend. It's a new year, a new tournament,” said Stosur about this year’s challenge. “Of course you want to win, but... playing here compared to Australia, it's just different. I love playing at home, but there is that increased, I guess, expectation.”
“I think it was a really good start,” remarked the defending champ about Monday’s contest. “Happy with the way I played. I thought I served really well. There isn't really anything that I'd say I have to go out on the practice court and work on. Tomorrow I will go out there and practice and I will be trying, you know, to fine tune a few things. But I think the first round is down, and it was a good start. As the week progresses, then you work on whatever you need to.”
Stosur will now be preparing for a second round meeting with Edina Gallovits-Hall. The Romanian emerged from a close-fought match against Stefanie Voegele with a 7-5, 6-4 win in round one.
As the world No. 123, Gallovits-Hall is a big outsider here. She’ll need to produce one of the best performances of her career if she wants to stand a chance against Stosur on these courts. This is arguably the best surface for the Aussie’s game.
“It's a nice pace out there, not too fast,” explained Stosur when asked why she’s so effective in New York. “It's quite high bouncing. I think for me using the spin and the way I like to serve, you know, I can use those things really to my advantage. I can get the ball up high straight from the word go. Then you can keep your opponent off balance. I think those couple of things combined made me feel comfortable out there.”
