Querrey may have missed out on an Olympic berth after a couple of years which have been largely ruined by injury but if he can claim a hat-trick of Farmers Classic titles tonight, that will go some way to making up for it.

He battled into the final with a 6-3, 7-6(4) win over his equally lanky compatriot Rajeev Ram. Ram had Querrey in a spot of bother when he opened up a 3-0 lead in the second set but the second seed came roaring back to dominate the tiebreak and take his Los Angeles winning streak to 12 matches.

“It was tough,” Querrey said afterwards. “Rajeev is one of the few guys that still kind of serves and volleys and uses his slice well, so he makes it kind of uncomfortable out there and makes it tough to play. Fortunately I got that one break in the tiebreaker and then served well the rest of the way.”

Berankis reached the first ATP final of his career with a 7-5, 6-1 win over sixth seed Marinko Matosevic, showing why many people think he can become a mainstay in the world's top 50. The Lithuanian may be short for a tennis player but just like David Ferrer, he punches well above his weight,

“He’s been playing great all week,” Querrey commented. “He came through qualifying, so he’s already won seven matches and that’s tough to do anywhere. He’s going to be ready to go and playing well, I’m sure. He hits the ball pretty big for a guy that’s only 5'8. He’s not lacking for pop on his serve or his groundstrokes.”

Prediction: Querrey in three.
