It would be a remarkable story if Ancic were to win. He returned to the tour earlier this year after recovering from yet another bout of glandular fever in 2009 which almost convinced him to quit tennis permanently.
The road back to the top is a hard one. While Nadal was lightly testing his injured knee on the practise courts, two weeks ago Ancic was warming up for this tournament with a futures event, the bottom rung of professional men’s tennis.
He has been able to raise his game for this tournament, battling through two three setters against the odds to defeat Bobby Reynolds and then Julien Benneteau.
Ancic has never had too much success against Nadal, losing their last match 6-0, 6-3 in Monte Carlo 2008. It is the only time they have played since 2004.
It seems unlikely that he will be sharp enough to trouble Nadal today. Nadal was very efficient in beating Rainer Schuettler 6-4, 6-4 and Ancic would need to serve at his best to get Nadal on the back foot.
