Rafael Nadal is the defending champion in this week’s Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, and it looks like he won’t be relinquishing his crown unless someone manages to produce a sublime performance against him. Even that might not be enough. The Spaniard eased past fifth seed Janko Tipsarevic on Friday, beating the Serb in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. He will now meet compatriot Fernando Verdasco in the final four.

“I felt well. I played a very good match, better than yesterday,” said Nadal. “Very happy to be back in the semi-finals.You cannot expect an easy match against the No. 8 in the world. 6-2, 6-2 is a very good result for me.”

“I have a lot of confidence from my past results here but it doesn't mean it will continue that way,” he added. “Each match is different. I go on court and try my best in every moment and hope it goes well for me.”

Whilst Nadal’s refusal to get carried away is admirable, he’s surely convinced deep down that he’ll get past Verdasco. Verdasco, who made the semi-finals via a first set Kei Nishikori withdrawal on Friday, has lost his last twelve matches against the world No. 2. It would be a major surprise to see Verdasco claim his first career victory over Rafa here on Saturday.
