Saturday's action in Stuttgart sees the world's top four all competing in the semi-finals, the first time this has happened anywhere in the world since Wimbledon 2009 and the pick of the matches will be this clash between Kvitova and Sharapova.
Few would have been expecting Kvitova to challenge for the title at the start of the week as with her awkward movement, clay is not really the Czech's best surface but she's been serving extremely well and that helped her to a 6-4, 6-4 win over local favourite Angelique Kerber in the quarters.
"On the men's side it's normal to have the Top 4 in the semis," Kvitova said. "It's great for the tournament, the sponsors and the people. It has been a long time since the last time, but hopefully it will happen in more tournaments soon."
Sharapova had an epic battle with former French Open finalist Sam Stosur. The Aussie served for the match in the second set and held match point but ever the fighter, Sharapova came back to win 6-7(6), 7-6(5), 7-5.
"The match is only over after the last point and when you shake hands at the net," Sharapova said. "Up until that point, you always have to battle hard. It's a one-on-one situation on the court. That's the way I play the game."
Sharapova and Kvitova are tied at 2-2 on the head-to-head but the Russian won 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in January's Aussie Open semis.
Prediction: Sharapova in three.
