Pablo Andujar and Frederico Gil will face off in round two of this year’s ATP Vina Del Mar Open

Pablo Andujar hasn’t made the most promising start to the 2012 season, but the return of the ATP World Tour to the clay courts of South America will give us a good idea of where he’s at with his tennis right now. The Spanish world No. 44 is the fourth seed this week in Vina Del Mar, and there’s a good chance that he’ll challenge for the title if he’s firing on all cylinders.

Andujar will get his tournament underway with a second round meeting with Portugal’s Frederico Gil. Gil emerged as the victor in a tough first rounder against Paolo Lorenzi of Italy earlier in the week. Lorenzi had troubled Gil by taking the second set, but the world No. 99 had generally been in control, and he left the court with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 win.

Andujar and Gil are familiar with each other, and both should know what to expect here. Andujar defeated Gil twice in 2006, but since then it’s been Gil that’s dominated. Wins in 2007, 2009, and 2010 have left Gil with a 3-2 (2-0 at ATP level) record against his next opponent. Andujar may well bite back on Wednesday though, and this should be a great matchup.
