Na Li will return to this year’s French Open, aiming to defend the title that she won here last year. When she lifted the trophy last season, Li became the first Chinese player in tennis history to win a slam. This time around she faces stiff competition from Victoria Azarenka, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova amongst others, but she shouldn’t be ruled out.

Li will make a start to her 2012 Roland Garros bid with a first round clash against Romania’s Sorana Cirstea. Funnily enough, the only previous meeting between these two players took place in round two of last year’s competition, in which Li cruised to a very convincing 6-2, 6-2 success.

Cirstea has been playing fairly well in 2012, though her 16-13 match record is eclipsed by Li’s 21-8 mark. Having recently gotten into the top fifty, Cirstea should be well positioned to make a spirited challenge. That said, the chances of her getting past Li on Court Philippe Chatrier appear to be very slim.
