Murray defeat costs British punters millions

Andy Murray's semi-final defeat at Wimbledon has cost British punters over a million pounds, according to Ladbrokes.

More money was placed on the Scot to triumph this year than any other player in Wimbledon history - but Andy Roddick's surprise victory meant the bookies escaped an enormous scalping.

David Williams of Ladbrokes told Bettingpro "It was the biggest anti-climax of the betting year. Loyal fans are in disbelief and we've escaped what would've been our biggest payout in tennis betting history.

"Tim Henman cost British punters more cash than any other sportsman but Murray might just have pinched that unwelcome title in the past few weeks.

"Murray-mania is over for one Summer and we've lived to tell the tale but we suspect he'll be back to give us more sleepless nights for many more years to come. His following is phenomenal."

Roger Federer is the 1/8 red-hot favourite to win another Wimbledon title on Sunday afternoon with Roddick the 9/2 outsider. Andy Murray is 5/2 to win Wimbledon next year.

Ladbrokes latest odds:

Sunday's Final

1/8 Roger Federer
9/2 Andy Roddick

5/2 to win Wimbledon 2010
