Laura Robson ends Kim Clijsters singles career at the US Open

Britain's Laura Robson has beaten three-time US Open champion Kim Clijsters in straight sets 7-6, 7-6 to end the singles career of the Belgian.

For Robson this was the biggest win of her career as she attacked Clijsters with some fabulous four-hands to clinch victory in 126 minutes.

"It was such a good atmosphere," said the Londoner. "I didn't have any expectations going into the match because she's such a good player and so experienced.

"I've had so many tough matches against top players that I knew the level was there, I just had to keep it for the whole match.

"She's been such a great player for so many years and a role model for all the younger girls coming up and it was so nice coming on tour with people like Kim to look up to. "

For Clijsters this defeat brings to an end her glittering singles career which included three US Open titles and an Australian Open title in 2011 as well as reaching the World No.1 spot in August 2003.

"This completely feels like the perfect place to retire," Clijsters said immediately after the match. "I just wish it wasn't today.

"I do look forward to having the next part of my life coming up."

Robson will now face former French Open champion Li Na, who recovered from a mid-match lapse to beat Australian Casey Dellacqua 6-4 6-4, in the next round.
