The Estonian had been 5-2 down in the second set against the top seed, but demonstrated her resilience by shutting down the Vinci comeback to clinch the win in straight sets.
“In the second set I knew I just had to keep playing my game - I didn't think about the score, I just tried to play the game,” revealed Kanepi. “I didn't go into the match thinking I had never beaten her, I just tried to go in and play well and try to win. Every day's a new day, and every match is a new match.”
Kanepi will now meet Carla Suarez Navarro in the final. Suarez Navarro had been pitted against Italian qualifier Karin Knapp in the semi-finals. Knapp will be able to reflect on a very successful week here, but on Friday she was second best throughout, and fell to a 6-4, 6-0 defeat. Suarez Navarro is now just one win away from a maiden WTA title. She’s come close before, losing in the WTA Marbella final on two separate occasions.
“In the second set I think she was a little bit tired, and I started playing really well,” said Suarez Navarro. “I lost the two finals I played before, but this is another place and another player, and I'll really try to enjoy this final.”
Talking ahead of her meeting with Kanepi, Suarez Navarro added, “She has a great serve, but I have a good return game. Kaia has experience in finals and won a big tournament at the beginning of the season, so we will see.”
