Davis Cup first round preview

Will Davies - 6 Mar 2009

Reigning champions Spain are without Australian Open semi-finalist Verdasco because of injury but are otherwise at full strength. World number one Rafael Nadal will make his return from injury when Spain face Serbia in Benidorm on the 6th of March.

Spain remain strong favourites in the first round; despite the presence of world number three Novak Djokovic in their opposing Serbian team. Spain are predictably favourites and find odds of 1/7 from Stan James to beat Serbia, whilst Serbia get long shot odds of 4/1 to cause an upset.

Roger Federer is a big name missing from the first round as a back problem has forced him out of Switzerland's testing trip to face the USA in Alabama. Without Federer the Swiss are always going to struggle and the bookies don’t fancy their chances by giving odds of 9/1, available from Stan James.

France look like being serious challengers for the title this year with a line-up that includes the likes of Gilles Simon, Gael Monfils, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet. To win the competition France get odds of 5/1 from totesport, making them the second favourites. The French team travel to Ostrava to take on the Czech Republic, a team led by Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek. France are the 1/2 Stan James favourites.

Sweden's tie against Israel has been the subject of much attention as it will be played behind closed doors. Authorities took the decision over fears about the safety of the Israeli team members. Stan James rate Israel the favourites at a short 4/11 price.
