Carlos Berlocq will do battle with Federico Delbonis in the quarter-finals of the VTR Open

Carlos Berlocq is in the best form of his career at the moment, and it looks like he could work his way into the top fifty if he maintains his current standard of play. The Argentine, for many years a regular competitor at Challenger level, is through to the quarter-finals of the ATP Vina Del Mar Open, following a 6-1, 6-0 hammering of Diego Junqueira. He will now take on Federico Delbonis for a place in the semi-finals.

Delbonis has been a dark horse so far in Vina Del Mar, recording some big victories after qualifying for the main draw. At first it had seemed like his 6-0, 6-3 thrashing of Nicolas Massu had been a bit of a fluke, or a sign that the Chilean veteran is close to retirement. However, his superb 6-2, 7-5 win against third seed Thomaz Bellucci will have sent a message to the rest of the field.

Berlocq beat Delbonis easily in the only previous meeting between the pairing, back in 2010. He’s also in terrific form here, and deserves his tag as the favourite. Delbonis has been playing some exciting tennis though, and at the age of 21, it’s fair to say that he may have the ability to surpass Berlocq’s achievements some day. This will be a fascinating matchup.
