James Blake made a very poor start to the 2012 season but recent results have been a little more encouraging. He got his Winston-Salem Open campaign underway last night with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Spain’s Albert Ramos. The fans in Wake Forest will have been pleased to see the American progress, but even happier to see that Blake has now set up a second round meeting with former world No. 1 Andy Roddick.

Roddick has won two ATP titles this season, adding to his already extensive collection. Despite this, consistency has been lacking from the American, who used to be a dominant force during the US Open hardcourt series. It’s far too early to be dismissing his prospects of winning titles though, clearly. The 29-year-old is definitely one to keep an eye on this week.

There was a time when a meeting between Roddick and Blake would be regarded as a major contest between two of the very best players that the ATP had to offer. Even now, there’s still no shortage of interest ahead of this contest.

Blake holds a 3-8 match record against Roddick. He’s lost his last two matches against A-Rod, but will surely be eager to roll back the years when the pairing meet today. This could turn out to be the most entertaining tie on today’s Winston-Salem schedule.
