Murray was not particularly impressive during his second round win over Andreas Seppi on Sunday. Although he won in straight sets Murray made a lot of errors and did not look to be playing the sort of tennis which could see him through the latter stages of this tournament.
On the medium paced hard courts Murray too often slips back into passive mode, waiting for opponents to make errors and gambling that they will not have the power to hit him.
He will probably be able to get away with the same tactics against Russell, a player who likes the clay and wins matches through his sheer consistency and fitness. He lacks the big weapons to hurt Murray.
Russell is ranked 68 and won a challenger event earlier this year. He has done well to make the third round here and he beat the 32nd seed Igor Andreev 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday. However his run looks likely to end in straight sets tonight.
