After a week's break for Davis Cup action, the Golden Swing continues for the next three weeks. World number twelve Gilles Simon is top seed in Sao Paulo but it's difficult to see him as a potential champion. The first week of the new season on clay is always difficult and it's not Simon's favourite surface so it's quite a surprise that he didn't opt to stay on the indoor circuit in Europe.

Fernando Verdasco will be gunning for his first ATP title for two years. Spaniards have a good track record in Sao Paulo with Rafa Nadal winning the title in 2005 and Tommy Robredo, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Nicolas Almagro all following suit in recent years.

Almagro is surprisingly not here this week but Robredo and Ferrero should be strong title contenders.

The legendary Gustavo Kuerten won the title twice in 2002 and 2004 and Brazil's hopes this year rest with powerful left-hander Thomaz Bellucci who finished runner-up to Robredo three years ago.
