The John Smith’s Cup – another of the big handicaps this summer – is run at York on Saturday over 1m2f.

This cavalry charge has the reputation of a graveyard for favourites, but sellers of SP’s will be pleased to hear that the last two jollies have both obliged.

However, buyers will take heart from four of the previous six winners all being sent off at 20/1 or bigger.

Horses at the top end of the handicap have fared fairly well of late, with four of the past five winners all carrying 9st or more.

Buyers of winning distances will be hoping for a change of the recent pattern, as four of the last five winners have won by a margin of ¾ of a length or less.
