The World Snooker Championship gets underway tomorrow morning with reigning champion John Higgins beginning his defence against Liang Wenbo.

Stan James spokesman Rory Jiwani told Bettingpro: "John Higgins is 1/5 to beat Liang Wenbo with the Chinese a 7/2 underdog to reach round two. The Scot is 15/2 to retain his crown but all the money this week has been for Judd Trump. The Bristolian was 11/2 for the title after Monday's draw but he has been backed into 4/1 to go one better than last year when he lost to Higgins in the final.

"Martin Gould is enjoying the best season of his career and he is 2/5 to beat David Gilbert in the other match starting tomorrow morning. Two veterans of the Crucible are also in action on Saturday with seven-time champion Stephen Hendry a narrow 5/6 favourite to beat 16th Stuart Bingham and 1997 winner Ken Doherty a 9/2 chance against 2010 champion Neil Robertson.

"Northern Ireland's Mark Allen has reached at least the quarter-finals for the last three years in Sheffield and he is 1/6 to win his opener against Cao Yupeng which begins on Saturday evening.

"We also have a load of specials for punters to get their teeth into including whether there will be a 147 break during the tournament. We go 11/8 that there is a maximum and 8/15 that there isn't. We also go 2/1 that a left-handed player wins the title and 1/3 that it goes to a right-hander. Ronnie O'Sullivan is a right-hander for this bet."
