The Welshman defeated Gary Wilkinson plus legends Cliff Thorburn and Jimmy White en route to the final and sealed the title by beating The Nugget in the final, dropping just one frame in the whole event.

The 45-year-old's achievement is bolstered by the fact he had to get through two rounds of qualifying to even reach the main event.

It was the evergreen Davis however who won the opening frame of the final, producing a superb break of 72 to take the initiative.

Morgan began the second frame by potting nine reds and nine blacks and went to make an 86 to level at 1-1.

The decider began in an edgy fashion, with Davis missing an early chance on a tricky red to allow Morgan in among the balls.

The Newport amateur cueist held his nerve with a fine run of 60 to secure the title and £18,000 first prize.

"It's got to be up there with the best moments of my career," said Morgan, who had never won a ranking title. "It's just nice to be back and to be a World Champion."

"I came here just wanting to play well on TV, but I didn't expect to play that well. In the final I just told myself to enjoy it and not to be frightened of losing."

Morgan dropped out of the professional game four years ago and insists that he would not contemplate coming out of retirement: "It can't happen, my life is too busy now," he said. "If someone could put me straight back in the top 32 I would consider it, but it would be too hard for me to get there."

The defeat for Davis means he ends as runner-up for the second year running and must now dust himself down in time for the forthcoming UK Championship qualifiers.

He said: "I missed a couple of pressure balls and Darren held himself together very well. Maybe next year will be third time lucky."

Jimmy White, Nigel Bond, Tony Drago and Steve Davis all return to action in the UK Championship qualifiers at the South West Snooker Academy this week.
