The 2012 Haikou World Open get underway today with the qualifiers taking place at Sheffield's World Snooker Academy on Wednesday, as a host of players battle for places in the new ranking event.

The world ranking tournament will be known as the Haikou World Open and will feature 40 of the world's best players competing for £400,000 in prize money.

The top 16 players from the order of merit will automatically qualify and will be joined by a further 16 players, who must come through the qualifying rounds.

A further eight wildcards will make up the field at the final venue and are to be confirmed nearer the time of the event.

The qualifiers run from January 11-14, with the players on the periphery of the top 16 needing to win just one game on Saturday to secure their place in the main event.

A host of top stars will take to the baize in an attempt to qualify, including former world champions Stephen Hendry and Steve Davis, plus legend Jimmy White.

Qualifying begins at 10am each day, with selected matches streamed live over the best of nine frames.
