Defending champion Ali Carter was knocked out of this season’s Shanghai Masters when he suffered a first-round defeat to Mark King.

Carter lost 5-4 to the world number 29, with King winning the last two frames to send the two-time ranking tournament winner packing.

Shaun Murphy had looked to be another big name set for a return home as he trailed 2007 winner Dominic Dale 4-1, but he hit back to take the match in the deciding frame.

Dale was impressive early on, with a break of 128 the tournament’s highest so far, but Murphy found his rhythm after that and reeled off four frames in a row.

Dale still had a chance to win it, though, and missed a brown off its spot when attempting to clear the colours that would have seen him through.

Also into the last 16 is Mark Allen, who was never in trouble while beating Ryan Day 5-2, while the morning’s other game between Peter Ebdon and Fergal O’Brien – two of the more obdurate players on the circuit – went 5-3 in favour of the latter.
