Ding to win on Sunday

Ding Junhui has already laid one ghost to rest this season by winning his first Masters title at Wembley, previously the scene of the most humiliating episode of his career, when breaking down in tears after a thrashing at the hands of Ronnie O'Sullivan.

That and other improved displays illustrated Ding's greater maturity, and have fuelled hope that he will at last make a serious impact on this World Championship. In being drawn against the limited Jamie Burnett first up, the Chinese star should have no problem progressing to the last-16.

The issue for punters to resolve is how to engineer a betting opportunity in what appears to be a mismatch. Burnett's long career has never looked like yielding a top-16 place, and he arrives in Sheffield provisionally outside the top-32. Even on the rare occasions Burnett has made an impact, such as reaching the final of the Shanghai Masters, the Scot benefitted from an unusually easy draw, including a first round walkover.

Only the biggest of hitters will be interested in outright odds of 1.16 about Ding, so it might pay to focus instead on the margin of victory, via the handicap or correct score. I prefer the latter market, as the 4.5 frame handicap mark seems more or less right. Brilliant as his best may be, Ding does tend to give his opponents chances, so I doubt the scoreline will be too embarrassing for Burnett. Earning the six frames required to beat that handicap is not asking all that much, even if he has little chance of winning the match.

My advice is to back a trio of correct scores, on Ding to win 10-4, 10-5 and 10-6. That way, we're taking approximately 2.5 combined, and can afford Burnett winning an extra frame than if opposed on the handicap.
