Here is our top five Batman villains of all times:

With the Dark Knight slot just around the corner, we thought it would be a good time to take a trip to Gotham City and revisit some of Batman’s deadliest foes.

1. Joker
No Batman story is complete without his arch nemesis, The Joker who isn’t just your average bad guy, but has also been directly responsible for numerous tragedies in Batman's life, including the paralysis of Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl and the death of Jason Todd, the second Robin.

The Joker’s origin story has always been shrouded in mystery but we do know that he is a highly intelligent psychopath with a warped, sadistic sense of humour whose bleached white skin, green hair and bright red lips gives him the appearance of a clown, albeit a deadly one. 

The Joker has been portrayed by a number of actors in Hollywood but the most memorable Jokers are probably Jack Nicholson in 1989 film Batman and Heath Ledger who stunned the world with his iconic performance as the deranged super villain in The Dark Knight.

2. Two Face
Whilst Two Face may not be as prolific in his villainy as The Joker, what makes his story almost poignant is that he was once Harvey Dent, the clean-cut district attorney of Gotham City and a one time ally of Batman. 

Dent goes insane after mob boss Sal Maroni throws acid at him during a trial, hideously scarring the left side of his face, subsequently adopting the "Two-Face" persona who chooses to bring about good or evil based upon the outcome of a coin flip. 

Aaron Eckhart wins, hands down, as the best ever celluloid portrayal of Two Face in the Dark Knight.

3. Poison Ivy
Ok, we get it – she’s crazy. But she is also one of the sexiest eco-terrorists ever to walk the fictional DC Comics universe and that in itself gives her a well deserved #3 spot in the Batman Rogues Gallery. 

Poison Ivy is also one Batman’s most powerful foes, being one of the few Batman villains to display anything close to superpowers and uses toxins from plants and mind controlling pheromones for her criminal activities, which are usually aimed at protecting the natural environment. 

Uma Thurman is probably the most well known Poison Ivy and makes an appearance in the disastrous Batman & Robin. Needless to say, she is the best thing about the film!

4. The Riddler
Twisted and with a penchant for puns, The Riddler is obsessed with riddles, puzzles, and word games. Nothing delights him more than forewarning Batman of his antics by sending him complex clues. 

Unlike most of the other prominent members of Batman's Rogues Gallery, the Riddler is not a psychopathic murderer; rather, he is a narcissist with an enormous ego, committing crimes to flaunt his intellectual superiority.

The Riddler isn’t the scariest or most intimidating super villain to grace Batman’s Rogue Gallery but stands him in good stead is just one simple fact - he is such fun!

5. Catwoman
It’s true that Catwoman isn’t a traditional villain but she does earn her place as a Batman villain. She has a love-hate and sometimes romantic relationship with the Dark Knight and while her initial appearance was not as an antagonist, Selina Kyle aka Catwoman certainly makes an interesting addition to the Rogues Gallery. 

A number of Hollywood stars have played Catwoman including Julie Newmar, Eartha Kitt, Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry. The most recent addition to the list is Anne Hathaway who will portray the sexy cat burglar in the next instalment in the Dark Knight series – The Dark Knight Rises. 

And there you have it – our top five list of villains, scoundrels and psychopaths who grace Batman’s Gallery of Rogues.
