Queensland coach Mal Meninga has named full-back Billy Slater in his 20-man squad just a couple of weeks after saying he had no chance of playing.

Billy Slater is an Origin legend, but he picked up a serious looking knee injury during the Maroons defeat in Game 2 and was all but ruled out - but Meninga has opted to select him anyway.

Whether or not this is just Big Mal playing mind games we will wait and see but he has also called up North Queensland Cowboys full-back Matt Bowen to the squad.

It really does not look like Slater will play, but he could be in the squad just to help boost morale. If Billy the Kid does not make it then Greg Inglis will probably wear number 1 with Dane Nielsen starting in the centres.

Sam Thaiday returns from injury and should start in the back row, while Ashley Harrison misses out with a broken toe, while Ben Te’o has been brought into camp.

The third State of Origin encounter takes place at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Wednesday, July 4.

Queensland won the opening game 18-10 at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium before NSW levelled the ledger with a 16-12 victory at ANZ Stadium to send the series to a decider.

The Queensland 20-man squad to take on New South Wales on July 4 at Suncorp Stadium:

Matt Bowen
Darius Boyd
Petero Civoniceva
Cooper Cronk
Matt Gillett
Ben Hannant
Justin Hodges
Greg Inglis
Nate Myles
Dane Nielsen
Corey Parker
Matt Scott
David Shillington
Billy Slater
Cameron Smith (captain)
Brent Tate
Ben Te'o
David Taylor
Sam Thaiday
Johnathan Thurston.
