Sam Tomkins fined by Wigan Warriors for Challenge Cup final gesture Visit Betfred Save For Later Posted by Bettingpro Staff 30 Aug 2011 Tweet Tomkins fined for v-sign (credit: gerard barau) Related Articles See all Challenge Cup news Share it Pin It Challenge Cup winners Wigan Warriors have disciplined full-back Sam Tomkins for his two-fingered gesture at Wembley last weekend.The England international, who was booed by a large number of Leeds fans while playing for his country at Headingley earlier this season, was caught by the BBC cameras aiming the gesture towards the Rhinos supporters following Josh Charnley’s opening try.At first Tomkins said he didn’t know what people were taking about, but since then the photograph has appeared on Twitter and the youngster has now come out and apologised.His club, Wigan, have been appalled by the salute and have now fined the player and hope he realises what a mistake he has made.Wigan chairman and owner Ian Lenegan said: “We were ashamed at the gesture."Such gestures towards opposing fans have no place at Wigan or in the rugby league family and both I and Michael Maguire condemn them unreservedly."Sam has come forward today to apologise voluntarily for his immature action, which he knows reflects badly on the Wigan club and himself and was disrespectful to Leeds fans generally."He is determined to learn personally from the experience, which has detracted somewhat from our enjoyment of a great game and a Wigan victory."Tomkins will now wait to see if he is charged by the RFL, whose match review panel are due to look into the incident on Tuesday.Wigan, who are back in league action this weekend, are the 11/10 favourites with Paddy Power to retain their Super League title at Old Trafford this season.
