Munster are strong favourites to beat RC Toulonnais at Thomond Park

Munster have averaged a 12-point victory over visiting French teams, and there is no reason to believe that they cannot see off Toulon by at least that margin.

There were just two away victories last weekend in the opening round of the Heineken Cup. Leicester beat Treviso 34-29 in the Stadio Comunale di Monigo, while Biarritz edged out Bath at the Recreation Ground 12-11.

There are just two fixtures this weekend where the layers will make the away team heavy odds-on favourites. Italian side Aironi host Bath at the Stade Luigi Zaffanella, while defending champions Toulouse make the trip to Rodney Parade to face the Dragons. Northampton's visit to Edinburgh, also on Saturday, might also have potential for odds-on punters.

But the lack of road successes in round one masks the fact that in Heineken Cup competition around a third of all matches are won by the visitor. With 12 games taking place, statistically there should really be anything up to four home teams getting turned over this weekend.

Munster have been a lot more solid than Leinster in the Magners League this season. Despite scoring 10 tries apiece, and conceding a similar number, Munster sit top with four wins from five, while Leinster sit eighth with just two successes.

Munster were lucky to salvage a bonus-point from their trip to Reading last weekend against Premiership-topping London Irish, but back at Thomond Park they are likely to be around eight to nine-point favourites against Jonny Wilkinson's Toulon.

The French side, which boasts 16 internationals from nine nations, have scored far fewer points than Racing Metro this season in the Top 14, and unsurprisingly Wilkinson has nailed nine drop goals in as many games.

Total points are therefore unlikely to be anywhere near as high as last week's Leinster v Racing Metro clash.

Munster have averaged a 12-point victory over visiting French teams down the years, and from atop the Magners League there is no reason to believe that they cannot see off try-shy Toulon by at least that margin on Saturday.
