England need to win against Australia to have a chance of qualifying for the Four Nations final

England will travel to Melbourne on Sunday to face reigning Four Nations champions Australia in a must-win clash.

Steve McNamara’s men suffered a 24-10 opening weekend defeat at the hands of New Zealand, meaning that any kind of defeat on Sunday will see England fail to qualify for the final.

England looked out of sorts in the first half against the Kiwis, but an improved second half performance will give them heart going up against the Kangaroos.

Australia ran in eight unanswered tries against Papua New Guinea in a 42-0 rout, even though they were not at their fluent best they did create some good tries and England’s defence will need to be on song to give themselves a fighting chance.

England have handed debuts to Leroy Cudjoe, Ben Harrison and Shaun Lunt, while McNamara has moved Sam Tomkins to full-back and Sean O’Loughlin to stand-off. The Aussies will name the same starting XIII that beat Papua New Guinea.

As expected the Kangaroos are overwhelming favourites to win this game and can be backed at 1/12 odds-on with 888Sport, while England are on offer at 8/1 with BetFred. The draw is available at 40/1 with Bet365.

Ladbrokes have odds of 9/1 that England are leading both at half-time and full-time, it would be a brave bet to take but anything can happen in international rugby league. Australia therefore are 1/4 with Blue Square to do the same.

Huddersfield Giants star Leroy Cudjoe is 14/1 with Stan James to open the scoring on his England debut, while wing partner Darrell Goulding is also at that price. Elusive full-back Sam Tomkins can be backed at 15/1 and considering how dangerous the youngster is in attack that is a very good bet to take.

Australia have a team full of superstars with anyone capable of scoring, but Brett Morris (6/1 Totesport), Billy Slater (13/2) and Willie Tonga (10/1) will be ones to keep a close eye on.
