Assistant coach Anthony Griffin has been installed as caretaker coach

Brisbane Broncos have sacked head coach Ivan Henjak with less than three weeks before the new NRL season gets underway.

Despite having two years left to run on his contract the Broncos have decided to cut their ties with Henjak after apparently losing the support of several senior players.

Assistant coach Anthony Griffin has been installed as caretaker coach in the mean time until a suitable successor is found.

It has been alleged that Henjak will be given three months pay on the condition he does not lift the lid on the reason he was given the boot.

Henjak, who took over from legend Wayne Bennett in 2009, has never been a fans favourite and he also failed to get the Broncos to the play-offs for the first time in 19 years last season.

Brisbane chief executive Paul White said: “It has been decided at board level that a change needed to be made in this regard and that change will be made effective immediately.

"These are tough times for all parties concerned, but I would like to express my personal thanks and that of the club to Ivan for taking on such a challenging role and for his valuable contribution to the Broncos for the past eight years."
