(credit: Gerard Barrau) Related Articles See all Super League news Share it Pin It Wigan Warriors and England Super League star Sam Tomkins is set to switch codes to rugby union this week - for one match only.To bet on Barbarians v Australia go to Bet365>rugby.Sam Tomkins has been selected to for the Barbarians in Saturday’s match against Australia at Twickenham in a bizarre move.Tomkins, who earlier this month agreed a new contract at Wigan stating he could not negotiate with any rugby union or NRL club for at least three years, becomes the first contracted rugby league player to be selected for the Barbarians.Tomkins will also become the first player to face up against the Australian Kangaroos and Australian Wallabies in successive weeks after he represented England in the final of the Four Nations last weekend.Wigan made it clear they do now want young Tomkins following his brother, Joel, over to rugby union, so allowing him to showcase his talents on the world stage at Twickenham seems a strange way to go.Wigan chairman Ian Lenegan said: “For Sam, Wigan and Rugby League to be recognised in this way by the other rugby code is indicative of the talent which Sam has and the growing recognition of the attractiveness and skill demonstrated consistently by rugby league each week. It also shows the growing profile and respect shown to rugby league and Wigan." "The game itself is a great opportunity for Sam to play with and against some of the biggest International names in union and will show rugby union fans what a tremendous talent he is."The Wigan Club was quick to give permission for Sam to play, a decision which fits well with previous Wigan creative initiatives in the Middlesex Sevens, the dual-code games against Bath rugby union and the recent partnership announced with Saracens."
