2011 Man of Steel Announced - Rangi Chase named 2011 Man of Steel Visit Ladbrokes Save For Later Posted by Bettingpro Staff 4 Oct 2011 Tweet Chase named Man of Steel (credit: Paddynapper) Related Articles See all Super League news Share it Pin It Castleford Tigers stand-off Rangi Chase has been named the 2011 Man of Steel.The New Zealand-born star, who was named in England coach Steve McNamara’s train-on squad for the Four Nations Series, capped off an interesting 24 hours by taking Rugby League’s top personal accolade.The Man of Steel is the award that means the most because the winner is chosen by the players themselves in a secret ballot and it helps build up the excitement for the Grand Final between St Helens and Leeds Rhinos five days later.The Man of Steel is awarded to the player who has made the biggest impact on the season and is an award that has been presented every year since 1977.Chase beat Wigan Warriors fullback Sam Tomkins and St Helens hooker James Roby to be Man of Steel - which is an award chosen by fellow players in a secret ballot.A former Junior Kiwi, Chase joined Castleford from Australian club St George Illawarra in 2009 and last week signed a new contract that will keep him at the Tigers until the end of the 2015 season. He qualifies to play for England under the residency ruling, having lived and worked in the UK for the last three years.Chase is only the second New Zealander to be named Man of Steel and the first since Dean Bell of Wigan was deemed to be the player who made the biggest impact on the 1992 season.At Monday’s ceremony in Manchester Jonny Lomax of St Helens took the Young Player prize, while Coach of the Year went to Catalan Dragons chief , whose side also scooped Club of the Year.Outstanding Contribution awards went to former Wigan, St Helens and Hull stalwart Sean Long and Rob Purdham (London Broncos and Harlequins).Betting for the Man of Steel is very popular and you can make your selections early on in the season, while the three nominations for the award are only announced near the end of the campaign.
